Hank Johnson (D-Decatur) was on hand on Saturday, Aug. 16 to honor First Senior Center of Georgia and several other charitable organizations at the Helping Other People Elevate (H.O.P.E.) Awards, part of the annual Week of H.O.P.E.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>Von Tran, founder and CEO of First Senior Center, said the ceremony at the Lou Walker Center in Norcross has been a highlight in \u201can incredible year.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>\u201cReceiving this award from Congressman Johnson is not only an honor for me, it also means the most vulnerable population of our community, our seniors, are seen, and the hard work of our staff and volunteers are recognized, bringing me tremendous happiness that my lifelong dream of having seniors be seen and heard is now a reality,\u201d said Tran in a news release.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tnt-ads-container text-center\">\n<div id=\"tnt-smart-ad-1\" class=\"tnt-ads dfp-smart-ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>\u201cOur nonprofits are the backbone of this country, providing critical service and support that improves communities and saves lives,\u201d said Johnson.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"tncms-region-article_instory_top\" class=\"tncms-region hidden-print\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>Other agencies honored at the H.O.P.E. Awards included First African Community Development Corporation, Georgia Asylum and Immigration Network, How Big Is Your Dream Foundation, Spectrum Autism Support Group Inc. and Mosaic Health Center.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>The First Senior Center has enjoyed an active year, making countless contributions to the welfare of the elderly Vietnamese community in the greater Atlanta area. The agency has provided nearly $100,000 in funding for emergency situations, conducted training sessions in collaboration with the American Cancer Society on cancer detection and awarded a free burial plot to a low-income Vietnamese senior.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>And Tran, a native of Vietnam who has lived in Norcross for nearly two decades, has received a number of honors this year, including being recognized as a Georgia Game Changer by WSB-TV, the Atlanta Business Chronicle\u2019s Leadership in Corporate Citizenship Award and a Georgia Everyday Hero by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>For more information about First Senior Center of Georgia, visit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fscofga.com\/vi\/\">www.fscofga.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From staff reports &#8211; Gwinnett Daily Post U.S. Rep.
