Discover how First Senior Center of Georgia (FSCofGA) celebrated Lunar New Year 2025 in Atlanta with Vietnamese seniors, preserving Tet traditions, culture, and community connection.
Vietnamese Lunar New Year Celebrated Across Atlanta

Lunar New Year, also known as Tet Nguyên Đán, is one of the most important cultural celebrations for Vietnamese communities around the world. In metro Atlanta, numerous events marked the arrival of the new year in 2025 — the Year of the Wood Snake, symbolizing renewal, wisdom, and spiritual growth. Among these celebrations, one stood out for its cultural depth and community impact.
Early Tet Celebration at First Senior Center of Georgia

On January 23, 2025 First Senior Center of Georgia (FSCofGA) hosted a vibrant Lunar New Year celebration for its senior members in Norcross, Georgia. The early celebration allowed elderly participants — many of whom face mobility or family distance challenges — to fully experience Tet in a familiar, culturally rich environment. For many, this was more than an event. It was a return to home.
Preserving Tradition: The Meaning of Bánh Chưng
One of the most meaningful pre-celebration activities was the preparation of bánh chưng, a traditional Vietnamese sticky rice cake symbolizing earth and gratitude to ancestors.
Seniors gathered to wrap hundreds of these cakes by hand — a process that took over 24 hours from preparation to cooking.
These cakes were later offered during the celebration as a tribute to grandparents and ancestors, reinforcing:
- Cultural identity
- Family traditions
- Intergenerational connection
A Festive Space Filled with Vietnamese Culture

The entire center was transformed to reflect traditional Tet symbolism:
- Red decorations for luck and happiness
- Gold accents representing wealth and prosperity
- Cherry blossoms symbolizing renewal and new beginnings
Led by Von Tran, the celebration featured:
- Traditional music and dance performances
- A Mr. & Mrs. First Senior Center contest
- Seniors dressed in elegant áo dài, showcasing Vietnamese heritage
The event created an atmosphere that was both joyful and deeply meaningful.
Tet Gifts and the Symbol of Abundance
At the end of the celebration, seniors received traditional Tet gifts, including:
- Rice
- Fish sauce
- Soy sauce
These essential items hold symbolic meaning in Vietnamese culture — representing abundance, nourishment, and stability for the year ahead.
Voices from the Community
For many seniors, the celebration was emotional and deeply personal.
Ms. Đỗ Lang, a 55-year-old participant, shared:
“Lunar New Year is the biggest festival for Vietnamese people. We set aside all worries to welcome the new year with joy.”
Mrs. Hua Phan, 77, expressed:
“My children live far away, but here I find connection. At the center, we share life together — and during Tet, I feel closer to everyone here than anywhere else.”
Her words reflect a broader reality among immigrant seniors — where community spaces become extended family.
Why FSCofGA’s Celebration Matters
Events like this highlight the essential role of culturally specific senior care.
First Senior Center of Georgia is not just a care facility — it is a cultural anchor for Vietnamese Americans in Georgia.
By preserving traditions like Tet, the center helps:
- Reduce isolation among seniors
- Maintain cultural identity
- Strengthen community bonds
- Bridge generational gaps
Celebrating Tet Far From Home
For Vietnamese people, Tet is more than a holiday — it is a time of reunion, reflection, and renewal.
Even thousands of miles away from Vietnam, FSCofGA ensures that this spirit lives on in Atlanta.
Through meaningful traditions, shared meals, and cultural celebration, seniors are reminded of one thing:
They are not alone.
